You don't need to be terribly close to the semi to get that benefit. I've followed semis at decent distances all over the country and haven't had any rock impact issues.
If you are looking to increase your distance between charges (for example to make it to another charger that is more than 220 miles away), driving in the right lane in "L" behind a semi using cruise control is a great way to do it!
This is especially true in California where their speed limit is 55 MPH and they will typically drive a consistent 60 MPH!
