Last month, GM executives told The Detroit News the Chevy Bolt name could be changed, as critics have complained the name is too close to the Chevy Volt, GM’s plug-in hybrid car. GM North America President Alan Batey said the company needs to communicate the name. He called the Bolt “the brother of the Volt — a bolt of lightning. It’s all to do with electricity.”

Do you think the Bolt EV will get a new name, perhaps next week at the Chicago Auto Show when Alan Batey opens the show at the Thursday Morning Breakfast?

I think Chevrolet could just add 'EV' after it, so then talking about the Bolt EV vs the Volt doesn't rhyme the same way.

Isn't this a moot point? Didn't GM announce they are producing the Bolt EV?

Edit: After closely reading the press release, GM says they are releasing a 200 plus mile electric vehicle BASED ON the Bolt EV concept.
Nothing anywhere saying they are producing the 'Bolt' for 2016

Correct - GM has themselves said the name is not finalized yet, although it does stay in line with the 'electrical' theme of the Volt and Spark EV...

Now GM has said they are keeping the BOLT name.

The only question is whether or not they will refer to it as the Bolt EV or just the Bolt.

I keep going back and forth on this, but wonder if GM made the right decision in keeping the 'Bolt' name for their 200 mile electric vehicle.

It's obvious to us EV enthusiasts that the Volt is a plug-in hybrid and the Bolt is a full electric, but to the average car buyer I wonder if it is just making things more complicated.

There are still people out there that don't know electric cars like the Nissan Leaf are available and it's been on the market for 5 years! To differentiate from the Bolt and Volt on a commercial or on a radio ad etc could prove to be challenging.
