Heck, I recall EVgo even charging a membership/activation fee to join. I joined during a time when that was waived (in Sept 2016).

Funny, I did the same (it was "national EV week" or some such, and they gave out membership/cards for free at that time). I've still never used it. (The EVgo DCFCs are neither the cheapest nor the closest - for me. I have the card (and many other vendors) simply "just in case". If I drove to L.A. or San Diego, I'd probably end up using it, but I don't need it around the Bay Area at all.)

Ahh... Thanks for refreshing my memory. It probably was a result of https://www.evgo.com/about/news/evgo-announces-free-charging-national-drive-electric-week/ in 2016.

My "Welcome to EVgo" email is dated 9/10/16.

I too have never used the card yet. I also didn't have a vehicle w/DC FC inlet from end of July 2015 until a few weeks ago. My former leased '13 Leaf had CHAdeMO. The used '13 Leaf I bought to replace it doesn't (intentionally), which I'll be selling soon. My new '19 Bolt has SAE Combo.

Well, they certainly used to do so , when they were pretty much the only game in town, and it was a doozy : $5 connection fee !!
When was the EVGo connection fee $5?

I started with them back in 2013 and I do not ever remember such a fee.
It was only applicable for the pay-as-you-go plan (not if one was subscribed). It was either $10 for 30 mins, or $5 connection fee ($4.95) and XXX per kWh (I don't remember exactly how much per kWh). .

That was pricing up until about a year ago - around May 2018, when the prices of all the plans changed.

Connection fee for DC FCing on EVgo was going on for ages.
Are you suggesting that this "connection fee" was for only EVGo L2 charging and not on their DCFC?

That would explain why I never encountered it before I joined, because I never used EVGo for L2.

Maybe that is why you NorCal EV drivers were so mad at the old EVGo and not so much of us SoCal EV drivers. Because down here their utility was DCFC. Not so much for L2.

With the continued expansion in the number of of charging stations, I've found myself using PlugShare's filter to select the station providers of my liking. This will become more of a factor as time goes on and, at least around here in the SF Bay Area, gone are the days of being desperate for ANY charging station. Competition is great!
Must be nice. Most of us aren't that lucky. Maybe we'll catch up with where you are today in another decade. Once our governor stops making announcements and starts actually doing something.
As compared to which Governor? California has been leading the way for years and will continue to do so!

Oh, maybe you are in Kansas, where the Koch Brothers are convincing the legislature to stop subsidizing solar panels?

Sorry, I am in NY. Yes, CA will continue to lead but NY typically is not very far behind with these things

Cuomo has announced all sorts of money for EV charging infrastructure. For example, the largest program is “Evolve NY”

https://nypa.gov/innovation/programs/evolveny

$250M through 2025.

IIRC, the $4.95 connection/session fee to start a DC FC session was for DC FC only and not L2.

This wasn't a Nor Cal only thing. A guy I know in So Cal w/an e-Golf posted about (on another forum) being hit w/the connection fee well after they got rid of it. Here's what he said on Jan 5, 2019:
"EVgo stations are EXPENSIVE. If you're not on their monthly subscription plan, just plugging in costs something like $5 PLUS electricity obtained, which is above local utility rates. I only use them when I have no choice."

After I let him know via that forum, his reply was:
"Thank you for that. I immediately switched over to the new plan. Love how EVgo never converted me to their cheaper plan, or at least told me it was available, and happily collected that $4.95 connection fee as recently as a month ago. "

You can see some old pricing for the "Flex" plan at https://web.archive.org/web/20180118065548/https://www.evgo.com/charging-plans/ and https://web.archive.org/web/20170831041743/https://www.evgo.com/charging-plans/.

Looks like I missed that connection fee, since I joined their plan relatively early in my EVGo use.
