So like a jerk I installed the 14.4.2 software update all by myself. I figure if a meathead at the dealership could do it, I probably could too. Turns out it's fantastically easy and at the very least makes Android Auto full screen and allows camera use from "P" so that's good.

https://www.google.com/search?q=chevy+bolt+14.4.2+software+update is a great place to start. Use a decent thumb drive, all told it takes under 15 minutes.

As for full Google Assistant functionality, I see no difference, and my brakes also feel exactly the same as before (from 14.4.1) but I'm not sure WHAT part of the car this upgraded. I'm guessing it's only the head unit, but "some people" apparently said they felt different. Whatever.

But it's out there, I "risked" it and it works fine.

Last week I made an appointment with the dealer to install the update so, even though I have the file on a stick, I figured I'd just let them do it. Went in there at 2pm yesterday and waited, and waited, and waited. They even came out twice to update me on progress and informed me there were TWO updates including one for the infotainment ... woohoo (no kidding, that's why I'm here but I didn't say that). I just gave him the thumbs up and and kept on waiting. I read both copies of SI cover to cover. THREE HOURS I sat there! Finally, at almost 5pm it was done. They even rotated the tires.

On my way home, I plugged in my phone to reconfigure Android Auto ... Nope. Android Auto fired right up but it still had the black bars on the side. Three hours and all they did was rotate the tires. They TOLD me I got the new update, but I didn't. Not happy!

After stewing for a while I decided to do it myself. Found a memory stick and erased it. Put the update file on it by itself. Stuck it in the car and started the update. About 15 minutes later it was done. This time I had to accept the terms of Android Auto. It loaded FULL SCREEN for the first time :) Happy!

Moral of the story: The dealership can suck my stick!

I've only had it long enough to drive to work this morning, and I was driving not fiddling with stuff, but I didn't notice any other changes other than full screen AA.

Side note: the electricians are here today wiring a 220 plug for my ChargePoint Home. They've been here for a month wiring everything BUT my plug. If they actually complete it, today is a blessed day :)

Did it myself last week. Super easy and yeah, the dealerships can be a crap shoot.
The only things I notice are the black map borders being gone and Android Auto
booting up on the 1st try almost every time now with my old Galaxy S6.

Wow. I wonder if they billed GM for that work? You might want to press your onstar button and talk to one of GM's EV specialists about that crap. Not cool to say you did work and then not do it. Imagine if it was something safety critical. "Yes, we totally replaced your deadly Takata airbags!"

This is why I do most of my own work. It's hard to find good, competent help.

anyone know if 14.4.2 fixes any carplay bugs? i notice that when using google maps with the phone connected to USB and listening to FM radio, the audio thrashes back and forth between carplay as the driving directions are given and FM and then eventually permanently switches to carplay. i'm wondering if they fixed that.

well... i did the update and the problem is still there. what it is is that there's a whole lot of latency involved in switching between FM and Carplay and so most of the time the google lady's voice is cut off. if the google announcement is too short, sometimes nothing is heard. if two announcements come too quickly, sometimes nothing is heard, or the google lady's voice comes out of the phone's speaker.

hopefully the lockups will stop - in a year we've probably had 3-4 times where the entertainment computer froze.

I'm going through the same now. They took my car in over an hour ago and am still waiting.
I should have done it myself, but I've bricked a device before and I'm not willing to take any risks with my car.

I imagined it being as simple as them here plugging in the USB stick and being done in 15 minutes.
At first they couldn't even find an update when I gave my keys. I had to show him the black bars, and explain 5 times that my screen occasionally freezes.

*there came the guy back*

He was able to tell me it was taking way longer since there were multiple updates for my vehicle, and that I shouldn't believe whoever told me online that it was just a simple update that wouldn't take long.

But I'm at least glad they found the update. :)

That's the same BS they told me when I had mine done at the dealer. I sat there for 3 hours! On my way home I noticed that NOTHING CHANGED! I ended up doing it myself. Worked very well.

Thank you for having the patience to bring your dealer along the EV road.

We picked up our e-Golf once at the dealer after some service - and it had about 11 miles left. We have to drive about 15-16 miles to get home ...

well.. my entertainment system locked up again even with 14.4.2, oh well.

at least now i know the reset button sequence. that speeds things up rather than waiting for the watchdog to fire.

Sigh... here is to "looking forward to 14.5.1" ;-)

Hi, is there a post about the 'reset button sequence'? My screen locked up last night, couldn't adjust the temperature or use the radio :(

Also, does the 14.4.2 update improve iPhone/Carplay functionality?

Hold down both the "Home" and "Next Selection" buttons for about 10 seconds. These buttons are located just to the right of the volume knob beneath the centre screen.

not really. my main problem was (and still is) the google maps voice interrupting the radio when the phone is connected by USB. the switch time is very long, and so the beginning of the announcements are cut off, and while you're coming up to a waypoint, the 2nd announcement is sometimes lost due to the switch latency... and then sometimes the music/radio just never resumes.

it might work better if the phone is connected via bluetooth, but i usually plug the phone in while i'm in the car.

sad to report that 14.4.2 is actually more unstable with carplay than what i had before. when music is playing from the phone the track info display frequently stops updating and inbetween songs it seems like carplay 'crashes' (completely quits back to the radio) and then reconnects.

We had two occasions when we started up the Bolt EV, and the center screen remained blank - before updating the software. And now it has happened once after the update. It came on at about 10 minutes into the drive.

I hope this is figured out.

one thing i've been meaning to do is hit "reset to factory defaults" - it's possible that there's some configuration state left over from before the upgrade that is not compatible with the new software and/or is corrupted. i'll try to remember to do that this week.

One thing I've noticed about the 14.4.2 update is that my "Home" button no longer works when the energy screen is displayed. Neither a short press (to take me to the home screen) nor a long press (to take me to Android Auto). I have to press the "Home" softkey on the screen itself to get it off the Energy screen in order to bring the hard button back to life.

I gave up with google maps because of this problem. I pretty much exclusively use onStar for navigation and find it to be flawless. I tend to use google maps when planning, or during the journey if I am not quite sure about something, but never for navigation. It works, but its not brilliant. Incidentally, I also used Bad-elf gps with a non-cellular iPad and found Bad-elf to be very difficult as it constantly lost the GPS signal for long periods of time.

I do not have those issues with mine and I did the upgrade..
Hmmm...

Can anyone please comment and let me know if you're settings were erase when you applied your new software update? Should I be grabbing my camera and taking pictures of the settings that I took so long to set up before I complete the update?
