"We have six now and four are already sold. Mid-December is the target week for when we get any more," said Brian Satterlund, new car sales manager at Ron Tonkin Chevrolet in Portland, Ore., which has more public charging stations per capita than any U.S. city.

I am from Honolulu, but called to order one from that Portland dealership. They have not given me an order number or VIN, but I know my color and options that are included. Hope to talk to that Sales Manager today to find our more about the timing of picking up my new vehicle, so I can arrange my flights, travel down the coast, and shipping back to Honolulu after a coastal "Road Trip" of about 2 months, so I can ship a "used vehicle" back to Hawaii and save some sales taxes. Aloha, Barnacle Bill Crockett

Yes, and no response from an email I sent. If they actually have/had them, I would have stopped by when picking up relatives from the airport (they're not too far out of the way).

I sent them a message via Twitter (actually also to the dealer in California - Boardwalk I think) and haven't heard back from either. That was yesterday morning.....

Either they're inundated with requests, or it's not true and they're avoiding us? ;)

My money is that he's talking about allocations, not inventory.

I talked to him yesterday about my ordered Bolt, and he said he was misquoted and he has no vehicles yet. Overzealous reporter. BUT, I will get the vehicle before the end of the year, the all important fact I wanted to know from him. NIce guy! Happy Thanksgiving! and Aloha.

I got an order number from Sales Manager at Ron Tonkin Chevy now, but how do I use that to go online to check the status of my new Bolt? Where is the link?

Go to the Chevy web site , click on chat and use the order status tab, when an agent comes on line give them your six digit order number and they will give you a TPW and a status code.

Thank you for the help. I was able to learn that the production date of my order number is 12/12 and they will now send me a weekly email update. The dealer Brian said that once they have the VIN and final price info, I can get an invoice, pay for the vehicle and qualify for the tax credit for 2016! Great news. Aloha.

In order to qualify for the tax credit, title has to transfer to your name in 2016.
You will own the vehicle at that point and any damage suffered in transit would likely fall on you (and your insurance). I'd certainly talk to my insurance agent before proceeding this way. You also give up the chance to inspect the vehicle before delivery. Not saying it's necessarily a bad idea, but.....

I am still hoping that the vehicle actually arrives in Portland by Dec 28 when I arrive to pick it up. BUT, I will insure it for delivery damage, and there is a warranty if the major components don't work when I turn the key? I guess the risk is offset by the $7,500 financial gain in 2016 instead of filing time for 2017, over a year later. I will pay for it by Dec 31, and see what happens. If it is late, I think the dealership has a loaner/rental program to at least get me some wheels to use? Maybe a used Volt?? Lol! Aloha, and thank you for your concern and advice.

If your personal discount rate is, say, 4%, then that one year delay of $7,500 costs $300. The trouble you've described seems like quite a bit to save $300.

Also, if you take delivery of the car in January, you can reduce the time delay of realizing that $7,500 somewhat. For any paycheck you receive, you can increase the number of withholding allowances temporarily so that less money is withheld in federal taxes. [If possible keep your state withholding allowances the same, otherwise you'll need to make state estimated tax payments to make up the difference. ] Or if you pay estimated taxes, just reduce your federal payments appropriately.

Cheers, Wayne
