President-elect Donald Trump on Tuesday threatened to impose a “big border tax” on General Motors if the automobile giant doesn’t shift some its production back to the United States.
“General Motors is sending Mexican made model of Chevy Cruze to U.S. car dealers-tax free across border. Make in U.S.A.or pay big border tax!” Mr. Trump tweeted.
In response, the company said the Cruze hatchback model made in Mexico is for global markets, with a “small number” sold in the U.S.
“General Motors manufacturers the Chevrolet Cruze sedan in Lordstown, Ohio. All Chevrolet Cruze sedans sold in the U.S. are built in GM’s assembly plant in Lordstown, Ohio. GM builds the Chevrolet Cruze hatchback for global markets in Mexico, with a small number sold in the U.S.,” said a statement posted to the company’s website.
Mr. Trump has also called out other corporate giants like Boeing and Lockheed Martin in recent weeks over the cost or projected cost of their products.

Probably a lot of bluster in this case; of course, he will take credit for something.

I wonder how many of those Cruze hatchbacks make it into the U.S.; if it is not too many, and it is the only place they are made, I have to wonder about the over-all popularity of the car; it's only been out since last summer and should be popular, so the numbers could change from what GM is saying right now.

http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2017/jan/04/donald-trump/mostly-true-trump-tweet-about-gm-chevy-cruze-manuf/ says that GM sold 185,500 Chevrolet Cruze sedans and 4,500 Chevrolet Cruze hatchbacks in the US in 2016. About 8,000 of the sedans and all of the hatchbacks (total 12,500 out of 190,000) were made in Mexico; current sedan production is all in the US.

The factory in Mexico made a total of 29,000 hatchbacks for sale in various countries in 2016.
