    Dead Car, Dead 12V Battery

My guess is manufacturers (all of them, including Tesla) used off the shelf components that operate on 12V as opposed to adding a transformer (?) to reduce the voltage from the main battery to 12V. Components such as A/C, windshield wipers, radio, lights, turn signals, door locks, and yes, the...

So, is my Chevy Bolt really an Opel product?

GM has sold "equivalent" cars in Europe for many years under the Opel brand. This is nothing new.

    little 12v battery under hood

Most everything in the car works off the 12V battery....lights, heat, radio, wipers, A/C, computer, etc. Of course the drive motor works off the main battery. There's a lot of discussion about how to check the 12V battery, but it seems that it doesn't give warning when it dies. And when it...

Time for a level 2 charger. Suggestions?

I suggest you examine your charging needs. How many miles do you drive a day, how often do you want to charge, and how long do you mind charging? Note that the supplied "charger", when plugged into 240 volts, charges at 2.8kW, or about 11 miles per hour. A 32 amp L2 charger will charge around...

Time for a level 2 charger. Suggestions?

You'll get a lot of recommendations on brand, so I'll let others chime in (or you can search this and other forums). One of the important things to decide is the amps of the "charger" (technically an EVSE...the charger is in the car). The Bolt will take a max of 32 amps at 240 Volts. Anything...

    Dead Car, Dead 12V Battery

There's a saying...misery loves company. You're not alone in this. Other EV brands have the same issue. Of course this doesn't help solve the problem. 12V batteries go dead, even in ICE cars. In ICE cars you usually get slow cranking before it dies, which is somewhat of a warning. I agree...

    Bricked

I hear you but the BMW i3 works the same way. The i3 was generally a slow seller and sat on dealer's lots for a long time, giving the battery time to degrade. Did your car sit on the lot for awhile before it sold? I wouldn't be surprised if the Nissan Leaf and Tesla do the same thing as well...

Turned on heater first time. Range dropped 20 miles

Yes, it's normal. A lot of people use the heated seats and heated steering wheel but not the cabin heat.

    Pigtail for Bolt

Your new Bolt will come with an EVSE (which most people, including me, mistakenly call a charger) which you plug in an outlet and plug the other end into your car. I'm not sure what you mean by "pigtail". There's a big debate about whether you should charge to 100% or not. You can search the...

    Cold Weather Issues

I've read a few posts about ice building up on the windshield wipers (while driving!!) because there's no engine heat to melt it. I don't live in a very cold climate so I haven't personally experienced it.

China far ahead of US, Europe in total electric vehicle sales And that's not counting the 200,000 plug-in trucks and bus

The stars have aligned for EV's in China. All the people want cars but there's no oil industry to support them. There are little to no repair shops. People don't know how to change oil or otherwise do maintenance on an ICE vehicle (EV's require little to no maintenance). The Chinese...

60 Minutes piece on EVs in China

I watched it live last night. As you say, more for the lay person, but I think the take away is that China is ahead of the US, and the lead is growing. We may be left in the dust.
